Great batsmen of the Decade

January 15, 2010

Dropped on duck and went on to punish Pakistan for their mistake. Ricky Ponting played an impressive and well controlled 209, it was a great lesson for Pakistan, a chapter of ‘batting for dummies, how it is done’. It was not usual Ricky onslaught, in initial stages of his innings runs were hard to come by curtsey of excellent bowling. He showed us, why he is the best player of the decade, true cricket lovers would not disagree with me. Six batsmen were selected in the top ten chart and not surprisingly so, not one Pakistani made it into the list.

The Top Batsmen of the decade

  • Ricky Ponting
  • Adam Gilchrist
  • Sachin Tendulkar
  • Brian Lara
  • Rahul Dravid
  • Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Pakistan has been a very important pillar of test cricket for more than half a century and has produced quality players. I am not going to open the archive and talk about cricketers that only Richie Benaud has played with, my focus is on last two to three decades. There has been no shortage of great bowlers emerging from Pakistan and bowling has been the key of Pakistan’s success for last three decades. Making the list of great bowlers are Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoib Akhtar who gave batsmen nightmares even on slowest pitches of the world. When it comes to batting we do not have many names to mention;

  • Javed Miandad
  • Inzamam-ul-Haq
  • Saeed Anwar
  • Muhammad Yousuf
  • Younis Khan

Pakistan had very good batsmen but not greats, likes of Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting or Sachin Tendulkar. If I stretch it then Javed Miandad might make it in the list of greats but let’s leave him alone as when I started to understand cricket he was not in his prime. I consider Saeed Anwar as the most stylish and flamboyant Pakistani batsman for 90’s. Inzi is definitely the best of the Pakistani batsman for last two decades. Mohammad Yousuf is a stylish and very good player but not so good under pressure.  No one from Pakistan come close to Ricky, Brian or Sachin – I am being honest here –- Pakistan has not produced a great batsman in last two decades.

Let’s come to the point now, who is to blame? We love this blame game, do not we? Let’s put our fingers towards the Pakistan Cricket Board. It is definitely PCB’s responsibility to pick the best talent in the country and groom it. Now what? We should go back to our couches and turn on the TVs, eat Samosa and watch Australia treat our team like club cricket team. Enjoy the live bloopers – funny drop catches – Kamran Akmal’s hilarious wicket keeping – Laugh at Kaneria doing Donald Duck in the field. Watch nick competition between BUTT (Sulaiman) and FART (Imran). Relax! This is not the first time it has happened before, in last tour and tour before that. Just enjoy the Aussie humour, enjoy the light humour, Ian and Richie’s commentary, Langer’s cheeky remarks.
